A dual-fuel heat pump is like a hybrid car, running on both electricity and either natural gas or propane.  This system provides both air conditioning and heating.  The electric heat pump provides heat for your home when the outdoor temperature is above 40 deg. F and automatically switches back to the gas/propane furnace when the outdoor temperature drops below 40 deg. F.  This is a very efficient system and some of the utility companies have some significant rebates for installing this kind of system.  The air conditioning is exactly the same as a standard air conditioning unit.
